The afterglows of gamma-ray bursts

چکیده
Gamma-ray burst astronomy has undergone a revolution in the last three years, spurred by the discovery of fading long-wavelength counterparts. We now know that at least the long duration GRBs lie at cosmological distances with estimated electromagnetic energy release of 10 – 10 erg, making these the brightest explosions in the Universe. In this article we review the current observational state, beginning with the statistics of X-ray, optical, and radio afterglow detections. We then discuss the insights these observations have given to the progenitor population, the energetics of the GRB events, and the physics of the afterglow emission. We focus particular attention on the evidence linking GRBs to the explosion of massive stars. Throughout, we identify remaining puzzles and uncertainties, and emphasize promising observational tools for addressing them. The imminent launch of HETE-2 and the increasingly sophisticated and coordinated ground-based and space-based observations have primed this field for fantastic growth.

On the “canonical behaviour” of the X-ray afterglows of the Gamma Ray Bursts observed with Swift’s XRT
The “canonical behaviour” of the early X-ray afterglows of long-duration Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) —observed by the X-Ray Telescope of the SWIFT satellite— is precisely the one predicted by the Cannonball model of GRBs.
متن کاملTheoretical Models of Gamma-Ray Bursts
Models of gamma ray bursts are reviewed in the light of recent observations of afterglows which point towards a cosmological origin. The physics of fireball shock models is discussed, with attention to the type of light histories and spectra during the gamma-ray phase. The evolution of the remnants and their afterglows is considered, as well as their implications for our current understanding o...
متن کاملFailed gamma-ray bursts and orphan afterglows
It is believed that orphan afterglow searches can help to measure the beaming angle in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Great expectations have been put on this method. We point out that the method is in fact not as simple as we originally expected. Due to the baryon-rich environment that is common to almost all popular progenitor models, there should be many failed gamma-ray bursts, i.e., fireballs wi...
متن کاملX-Ray Afterglows from Gamma-Ray Bursts
We consider possible interpretations of the recently detected X-ray afterglow from the gamma-ray burst source GRB 970228. Cosmological and Galactic models of gamma-ray bursts predict different flux and spectral evolution of X-ray afterglows. We show that models based on adiabatic expansion of relativistic forward shocks require very efficient particle energization or post-burst re-acceleration ...
متن کاملLong-term Neutrino Afterglows from Gamma-Ray Bursts
It is widely believed that multiwavelength afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) originate from relativistic blast waves. We here show that in such blast waves, a significant fraction of the energy of shock-accelerated protons would be lost due to pion production by interactions with afterglow photons. This could lead to long-term production of 10–10 eV neutrinos and sub-TeV γ-rays that accompa...
متن کاملBehaviors of X-ray Dust-Scattering and Implications for X-ray Afterglows of Gamma-Ray Bursts
The afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been commonly assumed to be due to shocks sweeping up circum-stellar medium. However, most of them have been found to be hosting in dense star-forming regions where a significant fraction of the prompt X-ray emission can be scattered by dust grains. Here we revisit the behaviors of X-ray dust-scattering in GRBs. We find that the features of some X-...
